Historical Energy Use

Electricity to power buildings and to produce steam use the most energy.

Energy Use Intensity (EUI)

EUI measures a building’s annual energy consumption per square foot. EUI is a widely used measurement to account for growth in building square footage and building type (e.g., research building versus classroom). EUI shows energy use divided by square footage over time. An increase in total building square footage for the campus (e.g., adding new buildings to campus) can increase EUI, while a decreased or even EUI trend indicates the added space is energy-efficient. The lower the EUI, the higher the energy efficiency of the building space on campus. The chart below shows a lower EUI trend for Mines despite the addition of many large commercial buildings to campus over the last several years.
